Awards Will Support STEM Education in Northwest Ohio

For Immediate Release | July 12, 2010

COLUMBUS - The STEM Committee, chaired by Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut, recently announced the awarding of a grant to support science, technology, engineering, math and medicine (STEM) education to the Northwest Ohio STEMM Consortium.

Building on the successful model of eight STEM schools and 26 Kindergarten through eighth grade Programs of Excellence developed over the last three years, these funds will support plans to create a STEM school and hub in Northwest Ohio, use technology to engage more students in existing Northwest Ohio STEM programs, build a robust database of programs available to students, and grow new STEM partnerships between public and private organizations.

The award recipient, the Northwest Ohio STEMM Consortium, is an alliance of 25 Kindergarten through 12th grade education agencies, 16 colleges and universities, 22 businesses, and 10 non-profit groups led by Bowling Green State University, The University of Toledo and the Tri-Rivers Education Computer Association.

"Growing Ohio's future STEM workforce with programs like the STEM Initiative is essential to our state's ability to attract investment and retain advanced companies," Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut said.

Recommendations for the proposals were made by an outside review panel commissioned by the STEM Committee, and final awards were determined by the STEM Committee and Battelle. Battelle manages the Ohio STEM Learning Network and was selected in 2008 by the STEM committee to serve as Ohio's non-profit enterprise. The STEM Committee was established in HB119 of the 127th General Assembly, section 3326.02 of the Ohio Revised Code. The seven-member committee consists of the chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents (chair), the Ohio superintendent of Public Instruction, the director of the Ohio Department of Development and four members of the general public.
